Characteristics of Dusted and Frosted Crystal Films

  • Durable, dimensionally stable, translucent film
  • Uniform color in both reflected and transmitted light
  • Low gloss eliminates glare
  • Dusted crystal film 7725-314 has the uniform appearance of etched glass.
  • Frosted crystal films 7725-323, -324, -326, -327 and -331 have the uniform appearance of sand-blasted glass.

Characteristics of Fluorescent Films

  • Durable, dimensionally stable, glossy opaque film
  • Activated by exposure to near-ultraviolet visible light
    Does not fluoresce under invisible ultraviolet light (black light)
  • Fluorescent films 7725-404, -405, -406, -407, -413 and -414 are extremely conspicuous under all daylight condi- tions and provide the high attention value desired under conditions of poor visibility, particularly at dawn or dusk.

Heat Reduction Film

Providing an abundance of natural light in your buildings is a great way to conserve energy. How Can Window Film Benefit My Facility?

Energy and non-energy benefits that can be realized through installing window film in existing buildings include:

What Types of Film Are Available?

Window film is made of polyester layers that are transformed into a thin transparent plastic film or metallic laminate that adheres to all types of glass. A wide variety of window film products currently offered in the marketplace have differing effects on the optical and mechanical properties of the underlying glass. Applied window film products can be classified into two main categories: standard film (tinted and reflective) and spectrally selective film.

Standard Film: Standard products provide customers with a range of low-cost options for reducing their energy bills by lowering the level of solar heat gain. The total installed cost of standard window film products ranges from approximately $4 to $6 per square foot. These products also provide non-energy benefits in the form of reduced glare, increased shatter resistance, and lower levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. However, they may accomplish these gains at the cost of reducing the level of daylight that enters the building and in some cases causing unwanted reflection.

Spectrally Selective Film: Spectrally selective films can generate significant increases in building energy efficiency since they block out (absorb or reflect) the infrared portion of sunlight that causes heat gain while allowing more visible sunlight to enter a building. These films are more expensive than standard products, costing approximately double the installed cost per square foot ($9 to $12 per square foot).

Background

The Franklin District Council had just built a new modern library in Pukekohe. A key feature of the new library was the large glass windows. One of the reasons for the large windows was to allow people to easily see into the library from the street. Pukekohe Library wanted to show what a comfortable, relaxing environment it was inside so they could attract more visitors into the library.

The Problem

The reading area in the new library had north facing windows which let in too much light and lead to unwanted glare in people’s eyes when reading. This was compounded by the sun reflecting off white pages in books. Unwanted heat from the sun coming directly through the windows also made it uncomfortable at certain times of the day.

When looking at solutions, the library did not want a tinted window film that would interrupt the view into the library from the street. They wanted to keep the windows clear so people could see what was happening inside the library.

The Solution

After testing some different types of Prestige Window Film on the library’s windows and gathering feedback from some visitors, Prestige 60 was chosen. It provided the required glare and heat reduction they were after while still maintaining the clear windows.

Biba Boban, from ASC Architects, who specified 3M Prestige says “3M’s Prestige 60 has provided the required glare and heat reduction and also maintained good transparency and a clear view through the glass. Therefore it has met both objectives that in the past seemed to be in contradiction and difficult to achieve without compromise”.
