Aesthetics Vs Functionality

Home / Uncategorized / Aesthetics Vs Functionality

Functionality of a material or a product is its ability to do the function it was intended for. Aesthetics is the outward appeal. Is it possible to have both? Or is it only possible to have one without the other?

In this blog, we are going to be discussing functionality vs Aesthetics of green materials.

Obviously, the main purpose of purchasing a product is to use it for its intended functions. Especially, when you use a green material, you use it as a substitute for already existing, well established  and well known conventional materials. So, therefore it is important that we use green materials which do well and have good performance. But also, while using green materials for construction purposes, it has to have a good aesthetic appeal as well. Because, a house or a building is going to stay for a long time. Its life period is around 50-200 years. A house or a building is considered a mark of pride, and therefore, aesthetic appeal is quite important.
So how do we go deicide which is better? Or should we not comprise on either?

This is one of the biggest questions that architects and Civil engineers face while construction buildings.  Which should be given more focus?- functionality or aesthetics? The best solution to this debate is to use a form which is aesthetically pleasing but it should fulfil its functionality first.

Sometimes giving too much importance to just the aesthetic appeal will lead to a loss in functionality. A typical example of such a design is the olden day Thai architecture. It had a lot of emphasis on the aesthetic design which lead to compromises on the functionality of the structure. Modern day architects in Thailand are trying to rectify this and are now giving more focus to brining about a fine balance between aesthetics and functionality.

Sometimes giving too much importance just to functionality without giving any focus to the aesthetics of the building also leads to a structure that is good at performing its intended purposes but looks haphazard. Many government constructed houses in the third world countries face this problem.

Another point to be noted about aesthetics is that it concerns not just the outer appearance but also the inner environment. So therefore, an ideal situation or an ideal building will have not just good functionality but also good indoor and outdoor aesthetic appeal.

An ideal building made of green materials, has an added requirement that it should look good, have good functionality but also the functionality should be as good or sometimes even better, than the conventional material that it is replacing.

To ensure that all three points are present, it is important to pick materials that fulfil the criteria. Let’s say we are using PVC Foam boards. They should have good aesthetic appeal, should have a wide variety of colours and designs that they come in. The should have good functionality like being able to be formed into the desired shape, have high thermal and acoustic insulation property, should have a long life cycle and durability etc.

It should also have engineering advantages like less time and effort for installation, less energy spent in manufacturing, high quality additives etc and should help increase green building rating.
